The Ayatollahs’ Democracy

In his portrayal of Iranian politics as a “well-staged drama”, Hooman begins his novel as a play, the prologue to the book, The Ayatollahs Democracy, detailing the disputed 2009 elections.  Majd argues a group of influential ayatollahs—including a liberal, almost-secular faction—still believes in the Iranian republic; for them, “green” represents not a revolution but a civil rights movement, pushing the country inexorably toward “Islamic democracy.”

The New Nobility

On October 11, 2010, authors Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan presented their new book, The New Nobility. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 the KGB was disbanded and a new Russian intelligence service was created, called the FSB. During the event, the authors argued that the FSB is effectively more powerful than its predecessor. Most importantly, the speakers noted that the “new nobility” lacks any parliamentary oversight and are not publicly accountable. Compared to previous outfits, the FSB is actually more opaque.

Building Palestine Under Occupation

The New America Foundation’s American Strategies Program and the Palestinian Note hosted Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad for a discussion of his state-building agenda in the West Bank, which he hopes will bring about the end of the Israeli occupation. Fayyad’s plan has reached its half-way mark and so far, has created stronger underpinnings for the political process in Palestine. Fayyad spoke passionately about the strong sense of self-empowerment and perception of possibility that these programs have brought about in Palestine.

He also discussed the regional history, operations, and goals of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Radio Azadi, the branch of RFE/RL in Afghanistan, he explained, is exceptionally popular, and its Afghan audience frequently expresses its appreciation and opinions of the station’s programming in fan mail.

Hubris and American Foreign Policy

Today’s event was a conversation between Schwartz Senior Fellow, Peter Beinart, and New York Times Op-Ed columnist, David Brooks, on the subject of Beinart’s latest book, he Icarus Syndrome: A History of American Hubris. The two authors were moderated by Steve Coll. Beinart first discussed the content of his book, which looks at the evolution of American foreign policy as a result of a dangerous pattern of hubris.
