On Wednesday, April 22, 2009, New America Foundation hosted a conference on “Democracy Promotion in the Age of Obama.” The conference brought together five panelists to debate the future of democracy promotion and the lessons learned from the Bush Administration’s efforts. At the center of the debate were the recommendations posited by Michael A. Cohen and Maria Figueroa Küpçü in their recent publication Revitalizing U.S.

On April 14th the New America Foundation hosted an event discussing U.S. interests in Latin America and the future of U.S.–Cuba relations, looking forward to the Summit of the Americas. Steve Coll, President of the New America Foundation and Washington Staff Writer for The New Yorker, gave opening remarks and introduced the panel. The panel included Carl Meacham, Senior Policy Advisor for Senator Richard Lugar, Col.

On April 8th Ian Bremmer, founder and president of The Eurasia Group, presented his book The Fat Tail: The Power of Political Knowledge Through Strategic Investing at the New America Foundation. Using the notion of “fat tails,” irregularly large probabilities of disastrous events, Bremmer discussed political and geopolitical instability in the world today.

On April 2, leaders of the world's twenty largest economies will meet in London to work to restore stability, confidence and craft a path forward for the world's financial system.  This meeting represents a prime opportunity for President Obama to demonstrate that he understands what is at stake globally in this financial crisis.
